Patrick Mahon Marine Surveyor & Consultant

Patrick Mahon, Pat, is located in Port Townsend Washington and serves the local Puget Sound Region including Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham and the San Juan Islands, as well as maritime communities nationwide. Pat is respected for his knowledge, expertise and skillful teaching of wooden boat building and restoration and has a track record of excellence and commitment to the marine trades for over forty years as a shipwright, surveyor and educator. 

Pat began as a wooden-boat builder in 1974 at Tough Bros. Boat Yard in England and over the span of his career has gained extensive skill, knowledge and insight into the complexities of traditional and modern wooden boats.  He brings this experience to his survey clients which is especially important when surveying wooden-boats and consulting on their restoration or repair. 

Pats commitment to the marine trades extends to the next generation of boat builders with twenty years of teaching all aspects of wooden boat construction in full time career schools. As an Instructor at the NorthWest School of WoodenBoat Building and Program Director/ Instructor at the Great Lakes Boat Building School,  Pat has developed career oriented courses and teaching techniques that guide the student through complex processes with clarity, thoughtfulness and patience. Pat has authored articles on boat building topics and is the author of LEARNING CURVES, A WOODENBOAT BUILDING TEXT BOOK. 

As a skilled shipwright Pat enjoys being involved in new construction or restoration projects and keeps his mind and hands engaged with interesting projects. Pat has been the shipwright/educator on several projects of historic significance including the building of an authentic reproduction of the Beetle Whaleboat for Mystic Seaport Museum, and a Pilot Gig for use on the USS Constitution in Boston.
